Description
Mining is a skill required to mine ores from the earth with a pickaxe or shovel. The ores can then be smelted down into ingots which used by a most crafting skills. It couples well with Blacksmithing and your mining skill determines the type of ores you dig up as well as your proficiency to smelt them into ingots.
The mining skill is also useful when practicing the creation of smeltable items (which can be recycled back into usable Ingots, with the amount of ingots returned based on the Mining skill). It furthermore gives a bonus to Treasure Hunters looking for Treasure Chests underground. You cannot mine while mounted.
With Power Scrolls, you can increase your mining to 105, 110, 115 and finally 120. The higher your mining, the higher your chance to mine colored ore, the less likely you are to fail at smelting colored ore and the higher your chance to get an increase on the number of ingots when smelting iron. You will also be able to mine the crystals from RDAs.
Usage
In order to mine you must use a Pickaxe or Shovel on a cave floor or mountainside tile. Ore may then be smelted by using it on a Forge. Be warned - If you fail to smelt you will lose 50% of the contents of your ore pile! Pickaxes can be purchased from the blacksmith or a tinker.
People often use pack horses to move the ore that is mined to a forge, others try to "bunny hop" it to the nearest forge. Bunny hopping is a method where you drag the ore in front of you, run past it and drag it again. There are often many houses with forges on the steps near regularly mined mountains to take advantage of.
A level 100 Miner, after the proper research, may also extract High Quality Granite and Sand for use by the more experienced crafters. When you have read the High Quality Granite book, you can click on your pickaxe and set it to mine both stone and ore. When you have read the High Quality Sand book, instead of mining only in rock, you can also mine the beaches and deserts of Britannia (or any random sand tiles available to you).
Ores
As your skill improves, you become capable of mining and smelting more obscure forms of ore:
- 0+ Iron Ore
- 65: Dull Copper Ore
- 70: Shadow Iron Ore
- 75: Copper Ore
- 80: Bronze Ore
- 85: Golden Ore
- 90: Agapite Ore
- 95: Verite Ore
- 99: Valorite Ore
A Gargoyle's Pickaxe and/or Prospector's Tool can be used to potentially advance an ore vein's level by up to two types (e.g., Agapite to Valorite).
Recommended Leveling
- 0-50: Buy from NPC
- 50-100: Mine and Smelt Ores
Smelting ore gives gains to mining.
